JONGENS // 3 guitars, midi guitar & samples, cassette tape, video (2015, 20 minutes)
VIDEO IMPRESSION, 7'
‘Jongens’ (‘Boys’) is a musical biography of three members of Zwerm electric guitar quartet, built around amateur recordings from their personal youth archives. The material used for the piece includes: an early demo of Bruno’s teenage band (a progressive rock outfit called Nursery Rhyme); a 1990 cassette tape containing bedroom recordings of acoustic guitar jams by Johannes, aged 11; and video footage from Toon’s high school graduation concert. ‘Jongens’ examines the musicians’ personal relationships to their own musical history by having them interact with their former musical selves. In doing so, it blurs the lines between the amateur and the professional, the private and the public.
Part I is a solo for MIDI guitar and sampler. I sliced up various recordings of Bruno’s highschool rock band and matched them with the actual pitches of the guitar. This allows Bruno to control the samples with his instrument and revisit performances from his youth, reproducing samples of his own playing by actually playing guitar. The samples are mixed in with his direct guitar sound, creating a two-layer performance.
Part II is a short interlude with Toon’s video footage and interview.
For part III, I’ve used Johannes’ childhood recordings to create a soundtrack, played back from a cassette tape player, on top of which I’ve composed three suitably 'lo-fi' new guitar parts. The three parts are interspersed with short interviews.
Performed at Gaudeamus Music Week (2014, 2015), Transit Festival Leuven (2014) and Ultima Contemporary Music Festival Oslo (2015).
